What Is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a standardized assessment used to measure an individual’s physical ability to perform work-related tasks. In disability claims, FCEs can be an important source of objective evidence to support or refute functional limitations.

Key Elements of an FCE:

  • Lifting and carrying capacity

  • Range of motion

  • Endurance and stamina

  • Postural tolerances (e.g., sitting, standing, bending)

FCEs are typically conducted by physical or occupational therapists and can help clarify whether a person can return to work or meet the physical demands of any job.

Note: While valuable, an FCE is just one data point and should be reviewed alongside clinical documentation for a comprehensive evaluation.
