How Functional Capacity Evaluations Support Disability Determinations
A Functional Capacity Evaluation, or FCE, assesses a person’s physical capabilities in relation to their job responsibilities. It is a critical tool in determining whether someone is able to return to work or if restrictions are necessary. It is also a critical tool leveraged depending on whether the standard of review is Own Occupation or Any Occupation.
In disability reviews, FCEs are often used to corroborate or challenge the medical records submitted with the claim. When used appropriately, they can be instrumental in creating a balanced, evidence-based understanding of a person’s work readiness and whether or not they are capable of fulfilling the responsibilities of their job.
